October/November Technician Class BARK will be holding a 5 day course where you can learn everything you need to earn your Technician (entry level) FCC Amateur Radio License. The Technician license is your gateway to the world-wide excitement of Amateur Radio.... and now you do not need to learn Morse code! This license will enable you to use the Bethel 2 meter repeater which has a coverage range of 30 miles. (Soon to expand to a 45 miles radius) The Bethel repeater features telephone-patch for local phone calls, reverse-patch (family and friends can call you on your radio through a local phone line), on demand current weather and 5 day forecasts and is connected to echolink, a voice-over the Internet system that connects you to other Amateur operators world-wide. The repeater is a great tool for emergency communications or for staying in touch while out hunting, berry picking, boating, mushing or snow machine riding. BARK also operates a meter simplex IRLP (Internet Radio Linking Project) node. IRLP enables amaeur radio operators around the world to link repeaters together. To earn your license you must take a 35 question test. A passing score is 26 correct answers. The class and test are free but the the study manual is $25. A limited number of manuals are available in advance by contacting Joe Seibert at joe@kyuk.org or by calling Joe at 543-0237. Get your manual before they're all taken! Call Joe today! Classes will be held on October 29th from 7-10pm, November 1rst, 2nd, 8th and 9th from 1PM until 5PM. The test session will be at 4PM on Sunday November 9th. A second test session will be held at a date and time to be determined. All class sessions will be held in the Main Conference room at the hospital. The conference room is down the main hallway and across the hall from the caferteria. You are not required to attend every class, however, due to the volume of material covered in a short period of time attendance and home-study are strongly encouraged. Previous students have also recommended taking on-line practice exams to evaluate your level of knowledge before taking the exam. See the links below to the QRZ.com and Eham.net online practice exams. For more information contact Joe Seibert at joe@kyuk.org or call 543-0237. See the class schedule and syllabus to the right.
